OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS

Consultative Committee.

A Consultative Committee has been established under Section 23(1) of the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions Act, Act No. 2 of 2010 and for the time being, a Committee constitutes the following members:

a) Chairman who has been appointed by the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance.

b) Judge of High Court who has been appointed by the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance after a recommendation by the Chief Justice.

c) Director of Public Prosecutions.

d) Commissioner of Offenders Educational Centre.

e) Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation.

f) Registrar of High Court.

g) Representative from the Zanzibar Law Society.

h) Two other members who have also been appointed by the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance after a recommendation by the Chief Justice. Namely:

 

The Director General of the Anti – Corruption and Economic Crimes Authority

The Commissioner General of  Drugs Control and Enforcement Authority.


FUCTIONS OF THE COMMITTEE

According to section 23 (8) of the Act, the Committee shall have the following functions:

1. To review the administration of Criminal Justice in general and conduct of prosecution in particular.

To develop and oversee standards of performance to be met by each institution involved in the administration of Criminal Justice;

To deliberate on problems facing the administration of Criminal Justice and advise the government through the Minister, on interventions required to remove or minimize those problems.

To issue directives, not inconsistent with constitutional independence of the judiciary and other institutions on measures to be taken to minimize delays and backlog of cases.

To do any other thing incidental to the above functions.
